Get Inspired with Your Fridge

18 Jun

I am a planner. I like lists, game plans and schedules.

Phil and I take time on the weekend to create a meal plan for the week before our trip to the grocery store. But there are times when the planned meal just doesn’t sound appetizing (hey, cravings hit), or horrors- there’s no plan.

I found myself in the former situation today. For breakfast, I whipped up some scrambled eggs with veggies and black beans, which inspired me for lunch. I usually take my lunch, but wasn’t sure what I wanted. But with a counter full of veggies, I realized I had the beginnings of a great meal.

In the bowl went mixed greens, peppers, onion, carrots, cucumbers, black beans, tomato, avocado and pineapple.

This salad was AMAZING! I also threw on pineapple that was leftover. Clean-out-the-fridge salads can be works of art.

What’s in your fridge? What’s your favorite salad combo?
I love southwest (beans, corn, peppers, chicken and salsa) and the Traverse City (dried cranberries, nuts, chicken and usually a fruit vinagerette). maybe I’m just partial. 😉

Stepping Away and Gaining Perspective

5 Jun

Following the half marathon, I have seen a huge change in my attitude towards working out. I find myself leading a more ‘balanced’ lifestyle. Honestly, I was always stressed about what I was eating (too much, not enough, the right foods at the right time?!) vs. how much I was running. I gained weight despite not changing my diet too much – it was frustrating. I felt controlled by running at times, overwhelmed and maxed-out. Not exactly what you want to sign up for.

Lately, I have been making a huge effort to get outside on my lunch break. My girlfriend and I schedule lunch walks – yes, we are officially ‘those’ ladies who wear tennis shoes with our corporate wardrobe. Oh well.

It is so easy to get caught up in the day and the to-do lists, but I am trying to get out two to three times a week. Taking a walk and chatting with a friend is the best mid-day refresher. Today, we headed out for a walk despite the overcast skies, the weather cooperated.

Yes, I am so fortunate to work on the water and have such an amazing view every day. It honestly never gets old or lost on me.

After work, I decided to try out a new Pilates class at the gym. For the last three plus years I have been going to yoga class with Katie and Kate at 8:15pm – never fail. And then, a month ago they changed the class!! It was devastating and I didn’t know how to react. I was hurt, angry, mad, confused….but, I finally decided to get a grip on my life and try the new class.

I also wanted to show you the new yoga strap I got to tote my cute new Lulu mat from my mom and dad. Running out the door and taking a pic with the iPhone, high quality pics here people. Only the best for you. 😉

Please note my phone minus the Kate case. Tear. It looks naked. Turn your eyes.

The class was really, really awesome. Sure, it was different – this was a pilates class and the other was yoga. So, there’s that. But, I still felt like I got a good workout; I toned, stretched and didn’t hate the instructor. Sounds like a winner!

Taking a new view on working out has been a breath of (much-needed) fresh air. Don’t get me wrong, I knocked out a few miles the other day. But, integrating fitness and health into my life rather than being controlled by it feels oh so good. 🙂

WIALW: Workout Support

28 Mar

This week brought on another round of Best Body Bootcamp. As I mentioned before, I signed up for Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp and I have to say, I am loving the program! Each week, you have a new schedule that incorporated cardio, strength, endurance and balance exercices.

What I love about this program is…well, everything.

The program is flexible. I have started my half marathon training, but am still able to participate in BBB. You can still get in your workouts, swap days, whatever you need.

The program is customizable. Tina provides an outline and it is up to you to fill it in. For example, selecting your weights, type of cardio equipment and days to complete.

The program is fun. There are lots of people participating, prizes and is a challenge. All things I love!

The program is about being the best version of you. ‘Nough said.

The program comes with a support group. As I mentioned above, Tina has done a great job of connecting everyone that is participating in the bootcamp. We swap stories, questions, advice, tips – it’s a great community.

The program is beyond affordable. $25 for an eight-week program. I mean, come on.

While I have not been as strict with her workouts and prioritized my training, it has provided great structure and guidance to my cross-training days. And, having such a large, strong community has made me feel like I am not in this alone.

The best news is that Tina is planning to do a few more rounds of the BBB since the first go has been such a success! Be sure to head over to her blog and check out the details.

What are your favorite workouts?

What do you do to stay motivated?

Burgers, paint and reveals

27 Mar

Ok, ok, I was a bit of a tease yesterday making you wait for the big dining room reveal. So, since you’ve been so good….

I’m going to make you wait just a wee bit longer. 🙂 my blog, my rules. Hehe.

Last night was lovely, I made some Mexican turkey burgers based off of Bethenny’s recipe. They were really good – the flavor was spot on. I ended up leaving half of my potato and beans.

After dinner we had a panic attack – we hired painters to finish the rest of the house and they come on Wednesday. Yikes!  I have all of my colors picked execpt for the back room. I am debating between a cool tone that looks modern or a clean, crisp clook with a lighter wall color.

We quickly jumped in the car and made an emergency run to Sherwin Williams. However, all it did was make me more confused. Ugh. When we got home, we did a bit more prep work before calling it a night.

Ok, now for the big reveal.

This last weekend Phil put the finishing touches on the dinning room I’ve been workin on for months. And, I have to say, it’s better than I had hoped.

Here is the mid-way. The bottom half is painted, however, the top is our patchwork of colors we had on our walls for over six months. Cute.

And the finished product.

I think Henry is a fan, too.

What is the craziest/boldest color or decorating you have in your house?

Painting, Bowling and (Hunger) Games

26 Mar

Happy Monday! Hope you had a good weekend, I know I did, so let’s get to it!!

When I got out of work, I went to pick up my main man who had his hair did.

You handsome devil.

Friday night started with about the best thing ever – spending time with our friends. We had a b-day party and made plans to double date to dinner before hand. I didn’t take any pictures because one hand had to hold the wine and the other was flailing around while I was talking. 🙂

We headed over to get our bowl on and meet up with the rest of the party. Again, few pictures as now I was dealing with a 10-lb ball and a pitcher of beer.

Please note the STRIKE next to player B. Yes, I am the worst bowler, so it was important to document this event.

iPhone + crappy bowling alley lighting = ghost girls.

It was just what this girl needed.

Despite our late night, I still woke up super early. What’s with that?!

I crept downstairs for some coffee, DVR and mail sorting. Once Phil woke up I was juiiiiced and suggested we beat all the lame-os still sleeping and hit up the movies. Nothing like the Hunger Games at 10am! He agreed, probably thinking it would be the only place where I might be a little quiet 🙂

I read the entire series a while back and have been anxiously awaiting the movie. I am pretty sure Phil knew he couldn’t keep me out of the theatre for long.

Ok, let’s get real for a second as I let you in on the best kept secret go to the first show of the day. let’s recap:

  • No urge for a tub of popcorn as big as my head in the am. Rather, we each had a coffee, (yes, I had more).
  • No crazy prices. Love the $5 before 5pm deal.
  • Lots of seat options.
  • Everything is super clean, including the bathroom.

The movie was FANTASTIC! I loved it mainly because it stayed true to the book and the casting director did an awesome job.

After the movie we grabbed lunch and headed home for my date. A date with the Sherwin Williams lady.

So, SW has this awesome program, if you purchase a $75 gift card, you can have a free in-home color consultation. Yes, please! A cute design major girl (Katie) came and spent an hour with me walking through the house picking out colors, talking style and gabbing about design. What a great program, I highly recommend.

Does anyone out there have an inspiration book? This is mine, I’ve had it since college…basically the old-school version of Pinterest.

I finally decided to tackle my long run for the weekend at this point and came home for dinner and some relaxing.

Sunday was another beautiful day.

Sorry for the off-balance pic, this time I was holding my Starbucks. 🙂

I had a few errands to run including a trip to the grocery store. Phil came with and was supper excited when he spotted the free wine samples. Classy.

Later in the day while Phil finished painting the dinning room, I took peanut on a walk I got my yoga on with Bethenny. It was a nice way to wind down.

We made dinner on the grill and enjoyed some vino and eats outside.

It was such a great weekend. Stay tuned, pictures from the updates coming tomorrow!!

Tell me why your weekend rocked.

Back from Outerspace

22 Mar

OK, lets get this little blog up and rolling again!

I have missed you all (air hug).

The past few days have been very mixed. I have experienced a lack of energy and motivation following the loss of my grandma, but I have stayed determined to not get lost in the sadness.

The beautiful sunny weather sure has helped. We’ve been clocking in anywhere from the high 70s to low 80s for the past week. Saaaa-weeet! No complaints from this girl.

Thank you, Mother Nature for bringing on a healthy dose of Vitamin D.

Bestie and I have reunited and have made a pact to sit outside (or walk) for 20 min a day. She also enjoys her Vit. D as much as this girl. I love catching up with her, but doing so in the sun is even better.

View from my office. Hello Canada!

Also, a big shout out to Daylight Savings Time. Thanks to our clock adjustment, I have been reaping the benies with runs after work. Oh yes. So good. Not only that, but, I’ve been doing so in shorts and tees. I apologize to anyone that had to see my scary white limbs. Lacing up post work is so much easier than trapesing to the gym, changing, working out, driving home…blah, blah, blah. And, lets get real, after the two weeks where I fell off the face of the earth, it is enough of a challenge to get up and function, no AM workouts for this girl right now.

On Tuesday night, post run, I cleaned up and the hubs and I headed out for dinner – al fresco with some adult beverages to boot. Outdoor runs + cocktails on the deck = balance.

But, I am not the only one benefiting, Mr. Hanks (aka, Henry) has been getting his exercise on as well. Lots of evening walks for this fluffer-nut. (Don’t worry, he is getting his hair did on Friday).

Sure, I am still emotional, sad and am sure I will be for a while. And that is okay. But, this time, I am taking care of myself, apologizing more when I fly off the handle to Phil and recognizing that I am healing.

It is so good to be back!

What is your favorite way to turn your frown upside down?

What type of weather is going on in your neck of the woods?

Lots of News!

9 Mar

Hey ya’ll (I’m down south, what do you want from me?),

I am super excited for today’s post because there are a lot of great things happening over here at BB.

First up: Change of Workout.

I am a creature of habbit. I do best when I can get into a routine and rock and roll with it.

Lately, I have been struggling to keep focus with my workouts. After I finished training for my races at the end of fall, I have been hitting the gym, but feeling lost; running a few times, doing some yoga, spinning, whatever I was feelin.

Then, a few weeks ago I saw just what I was looking for, Tina over at Best Body Fitness has created a workout plan that she was offering to her readers; Best Body Bootcamp.

Changing up my workout routine or taking time to plan out a quality workout is one of my surefire ways to motivate myself to get to the gym and reignite my exercise-lovin’ fire.

best body bootcamp

for the low-cost of $25, Tina’s boot camp  promises to be a “fun and flexible way to train” and includes regular emails from Tina with new workouts to follow six days a week. The boot camp lasts through the end of April.

The plan includes workouts for each week (cardio and strength) and asks you to set two personal goals. I am loving this plan as it allows me to still fit in my 1/2 mary training runs, but keep a good variety to my gym visits.

Second up: My blogging dreams have come true.

Through work, I get to work on some really cool projects and events. Over the past few months I have been gearing up for SXSW festival. One of the activations was creating a Road Trip for a select group of bloggers helping them travel down to SXSW. On the list?

Meghann from Meals and Miles (one of the first blogs I started reading!)

Jeanette from J’s Everyday Fashion (I seriously have a fashion crush on her)

Kelly Olexa

Yes, my blogging dreams have come true, I get to work with these girls (and everyone else on the trip) and meet them at our welcome party down at SXSW!!!!! (Yes, I realize I’m a dork.)

And last, but not least, word on the street is that breakfast tacos are all the rage in Austin. I have some lined up for b-fast on Sunday (hey, when you plan events, you can do what you want) and can hardly wait. A full report to follow.

Hope you’re all having a great Friday!

Back to Basics

18 Feb

Working out can be a love/hate relationship. It is easy to start out with the best intentions and enthusiasm only to find that fall to the way side thanks to boredom or lack of results.

Despite my love for being healthy and active – I realized that I had fallen into this category. I was becoming less and less motivated to workout, putting in less effort when going and seeing my visits dwindle trying to hold at 4x a week.

When I stepped back and thought about what was happening, I realized my lack of a plan. A lot of times we set a goal and then break it down by steps we need to take to accomplish said goal. And there in lies my problem, I have no goal. I have some races slated for the summer and fall months, but no training plan to follow. I was running a few miles here, a few there, it was all hit or miss.

While I love running, I find it much easier to stay motivated when I can work towards a race, setting a PDR or PR.

But to be honest, I really love other forms of working out just as much. I love Round Robin (20min x 3 cardio machines), spinning, yoga, Pilates and my weights dvds. My schedule used to incorporate all of these forms of workouts over 5-6 days and I NEVER got bored because I had such variety and challenge myself every week to hit another goal.

So, while I’m in my limbo stage I have decided to go back to my WO roots. I still run about twice a week, but no long runs. There will be plenty of strict training just around the corner and I will be dying to be a rebel and skip a run for a bout on the ol’ elliptical. And you know what? I’ve felt really good this week. Every single day I got up at 5:30 to get in my workout.

It just goes to show that when you enjoy what you do, you are more prone to stick with it.

What are your motivation tips? How do you stay in the game?

A Nutty Good Time

18 Feb

We constantly hear about eating for our health, that certain foods contain some awesome goodies (nutrients) that will help imporove our skin, hair, heart, the list goes on and on. One of my favorite healthy foods is the almond. With all of it’s healthy fats and cameleon-like ways, it goes from breakfast to snacks to milk to faux coating for chicken. The almond is a wonderful thing, and thanks to it being national almond day last week, I thought I would share some of my favorite nutty goodies.

Blue Diamond Natural Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze
This beverage is not only derived from almonds, but it’s also the best milk swap EVER. It’s our go-to choice for guilt-free lattes and oversized oatmeal bowls. An entire cup has just 40 calories and 3.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 1*). Find it with the shelf-stable milk products and (sometimes) in the refrigerated section.

100-Calorie Packs of Almonds

Totally essential for emergency snacking. Companies like Blue Diamondand Emerald make these nut packs in fun flavors and  basic varieties too. My absolute favorite are the Cocoa coated nuts…come to momma!!
All Natural Almond Accents
This line of delicately sliced almonds is the best and easiest way to add nutty goodness to anything, from coatings to salad toppers. There’s a ton of varieties, from Butter Toffee Glazed to Tomato Basil to basic Oven Roasted No Salt.
Justin’s Almond Butter Packets
There are many almond butters out there. However, since it’s SO easy to overdo it with nut butters, Justin’s single-serving packagesare pretty much a dream come true. How could it get better? The almond butter comes in FOUR flavors — Classic, Chocolate, Honey, and Maple. The standard 2-tbsp. packets have 180 – 200 calories and 14 – 18g fat, and the Maple version also comes in smaller packets with 90 calories and 7g fat each. Mmmmm…Lisanatti Foods The Original Almond Cheese Alternative
Cheese made from almonds? Yup, it’s a thing. And an ounce has just 50 – 63 calories and 1 – 3g fat… plus a gram of fiber. If you’re searching for flavorful cheese that brings less fat to your foods, try this!

Many of these delicious nut-packed bars contain almonds. There’s Cranberry Almond + Antioxidants, Almond & Coconut, Almond & Apricot, and more. Each of those three flavors has 190 – 210 calories and 11 – 13g fat  per bar. KIND also has mini bars with almonds — 107 – 115 calories and 6 – 8g fat each (PointsPlus® value 3*). Are we blowing your mind? Maybe you should have a snack…

What are some of your favorite nutty goodies? Not a nut fan? Whats the most diverse food you eat?
