Snack Attack: Theatre Style

15 Nov

Tonight is the night. I am going to see Twilight and yes, I realize how lame I sound. But, I really do not care. At this point I need to see the final movie, how can you walk away without the closer? You can’t.

So, lets move past it and talk movie eats. I never got into eating popcorn at the show until a few years ago and now it has become a staple. Somehow popcorn has become a staple in my trips to the theatre.

Besides the damage that tub of popcorn can have on your waistline, I am not a fan of the price tag either.  On average, a large popcorn (which contains 20 cups) contains approximately 100 grams of fat — the equivalent of more than six fast food hamburgers. With about 1,300 calories, that large popcorn packs almost a full day’s supply of calories for the average dieter. Ouch.

If you have more of a sweet, tooth chocolate bars and boxes of candy might be your downfall. Although you may think that you are able to eat only half of a candy bar, in actuality it is very difficult at the movies. Studies show that while watching television or a movie, people tend to consume more calories because they are distracted.

One way to enjoy a treat at the movies without destroying your waistline is to bring your own snacks from home. Here are some health alternatives you can choose:

• Bottled water, club soda or coconut water

• Granola bar (I love Lara and Luna bars)

• Dry cereal: Fiber One, Kashi Go Lean or Puffins for some crunch

• Low-fat mozzarella string cheese

• 100 calorie mini bags of popcorn

• 1-ounce of pistachios or other nuts (I am a fan of Roasted almonds 100-calorie packs)

• Baby carrots or sliced peppers

• Fruit such as apples, strawberries or grapes

• Shelled, salted edamame

• Homemade trail mix (almonds, raisins and mini marshmallows)

Frozen red or green grapes

And if you really want something sweet, stick to jolly ranchers or bring in one sucker…just one.

Part of the challenge for me is breaking the habit, so having a plan B with an alternative snack is the best way to enjoy the show in a healthy and cost-effective way. Time to plan out my eats for tonight!

Is anyone else out there heading to the midnight show?

What show did you go see when it first came out?
